Lorraine D. Chagnon was born April 22, 1923, in Burlington, Vermont. She was the twelfth child born to Narcisse “Nelson” and Delina (Bouchard) Chagnon.

Lorraine married James John Dougherty on August 31, 1940, in Burlington, Vermont.

James and Lorraine had four children before they divorced.
