Create a “Missing Info” Tag in Your Tree
|
|
When reviewing your family tree, create a custom tag or color code for ancestors with missing information (like birthplaces, spouses, or census gaps). This makes it easier to spot research holes at a glance and helps you stay focused when you return to your research after a break. In Ancestry, you can also add a quick note in your family tree by clicking on the person. There is a "To Do" section in the Life Story view to list missing facts as well.

In the Gallery you can create a research log (upload a text or PDF file listing what’s missing for that person).
|
Some users add a custom prefix like "[?]" to names to flag incomplete records.
In Family Tree Software (like RootsMagic, Legacy Family Tree, or Family Tree Maker):

Most genealogy software offers more flexibility:
|
- Create custom tags or markers (e.g., “Missing 1900 Census” or “Unknown Maiden Name”).
- Color-code people by research status or completeness.
- Use custom facts or events to highlight gaps (like “Need birth source”).
- Run reports to show who’s missing specific data.
