One Branch, Two Sisters, and a Hidden Truth

How careful research uncovered an adoption answer. Let me tell you about a research case that stayed with me. A few years ago, a man I’ll call Michael reached out to me. He was in his mid-sixties and had always known he was adopted. He was born in Vermont in the 1950s, placed in an orphanage as an infant, and adopted into a loving family who raised him in New Hampshire. His original birth records were sealed, so there was no simple path to requesting them.
So, he did what many people are doing today. He took a DNA test. Within a few weeks, his results came in, and there it was. A large match. Over 1,400 centimorgans. If you work with DNA numbers at all, you know that’s not a distant cousin, but a close relative. Very close.
It turned out to be an uncle. Michael reached out, and the uncle explained that he was the brother of Michael’s biological father. Just like that, he knew who his father was. Joseph Ward was a young airman stationed in Vermont in the early 1950s where he had met Michael’s mother. She became pregnant but refused to marry him. So, once he finished up his assigned service he returned to California, married someone he went to high school with, and raised three sons. Michael also learned that his father had died from complications during open-heart surgery in 1998.
Learning about his father unfolded quickly. But his mother? That was different. That’s where the real work began.
DNA Narrowed the Branch — Not the Person
Michael and I shared 650 centimorgans of DNA. That placed us in a first cousin, or first cousin once removed range. When I studied our shared matches, everything pointed clearly to my paternal side of the family.
That meant his biological mother likely came from one of my father’s twelve other sibling lines.
I was able to narrow it down to one branch. But that branch included several daughters of the right generation.
Some were married in 1954. Some were single, some had documented pregnancies around that time, and some had complicated timelines. DNA had identified the branch. Now traditional genealogy had to do its job.
Building a Candidate List — Carefully
Before I compared more DNA numbers, I built a structured list of possible candidates. I looked at:
- Birth years and childbearing age in 1954
- Marriage dates
- Known pregnancies
- Newspaper notices
- Geographic location
- Family movements
Women who were clearly too young were eliminated. Women who were clearly too old were eliminated. Those living out of the state of Vermont were eliminated. Some were ruled out because their documented pregnancies left no room for another child.
Eventually, three possible candidates remained. The three sisters from were from one branch. And I remember thinking — this is where patience matters. Because possibility is not proof.
When the Numbers Start Talking
Next came deeper DNA analysis. I studied shared matches among descendants of each candidate. I compared centimorgan ranges and asked myself: “If this woman were the mother, what should these numbers look like?”
One candidate sister began to fall away. The shared DNA between Michael and one of her descendants was far too low to support the expected relationship. The numbers simply didn’t fit. That was important. That narrowed the field to two sisters in that branch. But it still didn’t prove certainty. What we needed was one more close DNA match from the line for either sister.
I explained this to Michael and gave him these options:
- He could reach out to the family and ask someone to test — which would require explaining that he might be related.
- He could accept that one of the two sisters was his mother and leave it there.
- Or he could wait and see if someone related to them happened to test.
He chose to wait. And so, we waited.
The Year Between Question and Answer
DNA research does not move on our schedule — or as quickly as we’d like. Nearly a year passed before a new match appeared. A grandson of one of the two sisters.
When I saw the number — 1,179 centimorgans — I knew they were very close. That number falls squarely within the expected range of a half-nephew relationship. That’s not vague. That’s not speculative. That’s extremely strong.
I reached out to the match — I’ll call him Jonathan — and asked about his relationship to one of the two sisters, whom I will call Betty. He confirmed he was her grandson. Jonathan was surprised by Michael’s match and wanted me to explain how Michael could possibly be so closely related. Ancestry.com had Michael listed as a half uncle. I told him that I would have Michael connect him. After chatting with Michael, Jonathan explained the situation to Lisa (his mother) — that Michael might be her half-brother. At that point, no one had mentioned that Michael might be her biological half son. Lisa’s mother Betty never mentioned that she had had a son or gave up a child for adoption. I suggested that Lisa should do a DNA test to confirm the relationship even though we had Jonathan’s DNA match.
As luck would have it, Betty lived with Jonathan and Lisa and happened to overhear that Lisa was doing a DNA test. She asked Lisa what a DNA test was for, Lisa not wanting to discuss the true reason just yet, said she was testing to see how much native American ancestry she had. Betty thought that would be interesting to know and wanted to take a DNA test as well.
After decades of silence, Michael finally had his answer. Betty was his biological mother. The DNA tests that Lisa and Betty took confirmed it.
And Then Came the Hardest Part
Betty was in her nineties at the time. Her health was declining and until now, her family had known nothing about her giving Michael up for adoption.
And this is the part people don’t always talk about. DNA may reveal truth — but truth sometimes can carry secrets that not everyone wants to know.
Jonathan, Lisa, her four sisters, and I discussed a few different ways on how to handle this information. After a long and thoughtful conversation, it was decided because Betty has never mentioned having a son, they would not confront Betty about this. Instead, in order to get to know Michael and give him the opportunity to get to know his biological mother, they decided that he would be introduced as a family friend and go from there.
Michael was able to meet her and his biological family. They now have a quality relationship, and he is included in family gathering as well as able to get to know his mother without causing harm and with dignity preserved. I remember thinking — this is why ethics matters in genealogy.
What This Case Reinforced for Me
DNA can reveal extraordinary truths. But careful research still matters. Structured reasoning still matters. Understanding relationship ranges still matters. And ethical restraint absolutely matters.
