What 1,179 Centimorgans Really Means

In the story I shared, “Two Sisters. One Answer. A Year of Waiting” the breakthrough moment came when a new DNA match appeared, 1,179 centimorgans. In that case the interpretation of close DNA matches made all the difference. But the real lesson applies to anyone working with genetic genealogy.
If you’re newer to DNA research, that number might not immediately mean anything. But it meant everything to me. Let me explain why.
First, What Is a Centimorgan?
A centimorgan (cM) is simply a unit used to measure shared DNA. The higher the number, the closer the biological relationship. Very distant cousins might share 20 or 30 cM. First cousins often share around 850 cM. Half siblings? That’s much higher, usually around 1,300–2,300 cM.
So, when Michael’s first large match appeared at over 1,400 cM, we knew immediately we were looking at a close relative. That DNA match solved his father’s identity quickly. But on the maternal side, things were more layered.
Why 1,179 cM Was So Important
When the grandson of one of the remaining two candidates tested and shared 1,179 cM with Michael, I stopped and looked carefully.
If Betty were Michael’s biological mother, then her daughter would be Michael’s half-sister. And her grandson would be Michael’s half nephew. The expected range for a half nephew is strong, often around 800–1,300 centimorgans.
The 1,179 cM fit beautifully within that range. That wasn’t a vague match. That wasn’t “maybe.” That was consistent. DNA doesn’t usually give us certainty in one single number, but it gives us probability ranges. And this one fell exactly where it should.
Why Another Candidate Was Eliminated
Earlier in the research, one of the other sisters seemed possible, until we looked at the shared DNA with one of her descendants.
The number was far too low to support the expected half relationship. It didn’t fall within the statistical range. And that matters. DNA doesn’t just confirm relationships. It also eliminates them. That’s one of the most powerful parts of genetic genealogy.
Why We Still Needed One More Test
Even with 1,179 cM, I wanted confirmation from one more generation. When Betty and her daughter tested, their results aligned perfectly with what we expected:
- Betty matched at the parent/child level.
- Lisa matched at the half-sibling level.
At that point, the evidence was no longer theoretical. It was conclusive.
The Important Takeaway
Centimorgans are not magic numbers. They are ranges. They require interpretation. And they work best when combined with structured genealogy research — not in place of it. In this case, the records narrowed the field. DNA clarified the relationships. Together, they revealed the truth.
