Genealogy Term of the Month: Pedigree Collapse
Pedigree Collapse is when the same ancestor appears in your tree more than once (cousins marrying cousins).

DNA Tip – Check the Longest Segment, Not Just Total cM

When you’re looking at DNA matches, it’s easy to focus only on the total centimorgans (cM) shared. But don’t overlook the longest segment of shared DNA.A long segment (over 20–30 cM) often points to a more recent shared ancestor, even if the total cM looks small.Short, scattered segments might come from far back in your family tree or could be “false positives.”Some testing sites (like MyHeritage and GEDmatch) show this information, use it to help separate close, meaningful matches from noise.
“Did You Know?”Ellis Island wasn’t the first immigrant station.
Before Ellis Island opened in 1892, over 8 million immigrants were processed at Castle Garden in New York.
